When one of the best forwards in football, Neymar Jr. moved to PSG for $300 million it raised the question again – Is too much money being spent in football?

What is $300 million worth?

With 300 million, one can buy a 36,000 square feet mansion in USA. The mansion has almost any facility you can dream of.  Ranging from a candy room with $200,000 worth of candy to a garage with $30 million worth of cars. The house also comes with 7 full time staff, two helicopters and $15 million worth of art collection. The house costs about $230 million.

After buying the house, one will also have enough money left to buy a whole football club. Huddersfield Town is a team which plays in the English Premier League. The club values at about 60 million.

One will still have enough money remaining to travel the world in luxury (First class plane tickets, best hotels, etc.) and create a wonderful blog.

One will then still have more money left than a normal person will earn throughout his whole life.

The chances of becoming a professional footballer vs becoming a doctor

Football is played by almost 2.5 billion people in the world. Yet there are only 65,000 professional footballers in the world. Therefore, the chances of one becoming a professional footballer is 0.003% (3 in every 100,000 footballers become pro). Also, most professionals start at the age of 20 and retire at around 35. This means that footballers have to earn most of their money in 10-15 years.

The chances of one becoming a great doctor (with a very high paying salary) is 0.3%. Also, these doctors have about 40-50 years to earn their money.

This means that it is almost 100x easier to become a doctor than a footballer.

Cristiano Ronaldo, a footballing legend, makes an astounding $200 million a year (Including revenues from social media, billboards, promotions, etc.). He is the highest paid athlete.

Meanwhile, Netherland offers the highest salary for Doctors in the world. A specialist doctor can earn up to $400,000 a year.

This leads us the to the debated question:

Is too much money being spent in Football?

There are two different views…

One view is by the people who see football as a game where 11 humans kick a ball for 90 minutes. These people will definatly find the work of a doctor much more important. As doctors spent most of their lives saving other people’s lives. These people argue that too much money is being spent in football.

Then there is the other view by the people who think football is much more than a sport. It is a passion and it is a major part of their life. These people think that doctors might give you a life but football is your life. Football is your inspiration and without it, life is pointless. These people believe that the money which is spent is fair.

So, is too much money being spent in Football?

It depends…which of the above view do you support?

Personally, I believe that not too much of money is being spent in football, since the example of transfer for Neymar, Ronaldo, Bale are more of exceptions. It is also true that the average transfer fee has increased over the years. But the main point is the popularity of the game is increasing and viewership is also increasing in countries other than Europe. Also, these days fans are willing to spend a lot of money in buying merchandise.  Finally, as long as the clubs are not making losses and fans are supporting the club, all the money spent is justified.
